Program Description:

Argentina - home of the tango, gauchos (Argentine cowboys), incredible natural beauty, and Buenos Aires, the Paris of South America - is a great place to volunteer or intern. There are a number of programs available here. You may also wish to combine your work with Spanish classes.

Buenos Aires is truly one of the world's great capitals. With over 9,000,000 residents, this is no sleepy town. In fact sleep is optional in this 24 hour metropolis. With its European-style boulevards, cultural venues, fine restaurants and clubs, you may never want to sleep.

The people of Buenos Aires, called porteños, are primarily of Spanish and Italian descent. They are known for their style and flair. They are as proud and as passionate as the tango, the dance they invented and continue even today.

Of course, Buenos Aires can also be your doorway to the rest of Argentina. When it's summer in the Northern Hemisphere, you can be skiing in the Andes. Or maybe you'd like to discover the wine country, or the Pampas, the vast agricultural and ranching plains of Argentina, or the wilds of Tierra del Fuego and the rest of Patagonia. There are few destinations that can match what awaits you in Argentina.

ELI works with a wide variety of organizations based in cosmopolitan Buenos Aires to create internships designed to give valuable international work experience, improve Spanish proficiency, and firsthand experience with the complexities of doing business in Argentina. All interns must have at least an intermediate level of Spanish proficiency and feel comfortable working in an all-Spanish speaking environment.

Fashion

Buenos Aires is one of the fashion capitals of Latin America. Porteños are well known for their sophisticated style. Interns looking to gain experience in fashion design can work with a fashion studio in Buenos Aires. The studio offers courses to local students and works with textile companies to create completely original designs. In 2001, the Argentine Secretary of Culture and Communication formally recognized the studio as valuable Argentine cultural and educational institution. Interns assist with the process of designing textiles and assisting clients.

Requirements:

·        Resume in Spanish

·        Intermediate Spanish Proficiency

·        Interest in Fashion--bringing a portfolio helps

Housing Options

Homestay

We have home stays located throughout the nicest neighborhoods of Buenos Aires (i.e. Palermo, Belgrano, Barrio Norte, Recoleta, Colegiales, etc.) which means that we will be able to place you close to your school, volunteer or internship placement.  Our families choose to house international students because they believe in the benefits of cultural exchange and enjoy opening their home and family to new people.  You will be provided with your own furnished room, breakfast and dinner daily, and a telephone for incoming calls. Homestays are best if your main goal is to learn as much Spanish as possible, you enjoy being at home with family, you don't have strict dietary restrictions, you are open minded to new living conditions and cultures.

Student Residence

The student residence is located in the neighborhood of Recoleta, only a few blocks from the subway, dozens of bus lines and the best dining and shopping in Buenos Aires.  The student residence includes shared room (single rooms are not available), personal closet with lock and key, private bathroom in each room, study room with free wireless internet access, shared kitchen, lounge with TV, telephones, laundry service, linens and towels, and cleaning service. The student residence is best if you want to meet lots of new people, you prefer to come and go as you please, you don't mind sharing a room, and you will be eating out and traveling frequently.

Participants staying in the shared apartment will have a private, furnished room. The shared apartment option is best for you if you want to live with an Argentine your own age, if you prefer to prepare your own meals, if you feel you need the freedom to come and go, and if you feel you have outgrown a homestay or student residence arrangement.
