Program Description:
Hospital

This program gives students a chance to learn about health care problems faced by urban poor.
Students work one on one with local doctors in local hospitals and small community clinics. This program offers great learning opportunities for pre-meds, medical students, public health students and nursing students who are interested in International health. This program can be combined with Rural Health Program.

What Do I Do on The Program?

Students can rotate at a variety of hospital and clinic settings. There are also day trips to additional sites to gives students a comprehensive view of the health care system in India. Sample sites for a 4 week rotation: 
  • Municipal Hospital: Here students can rotate through the various departments, work with doctors in outpatient clinics and see inpatient facilities through hospital and ward rounds. Here they can also spend time at the ICCU, the neo natal ICCU and hospital wards.
  • Dialysis center:  Spend time at the local dialysis center to learn about procedures, treatments, complications and other issues related to chronic renal failure.
  • Aids/HIV: A day is spent at the local AIDS center to study medical treatment and rehabilitation of HIV positive patients.
  • Charitable Hospital: Work in outpatient clinic, dental clinic, sonography and pathology department and ophthalmic clinic.
  • Health Outreach Post: Work in the outpatient clinic, TB department, and with a pediatrician.
  • Eye Hospitals to see cataract surgeries.

Eligibility

  • This Program is Open to All Levels of Pre-medical, Medical, Nursing Students, Doctors, Residents and Allied Health Professionals
  • At Least 20 Years of Age
  • Relevant Academic Background and/or Work
  • Experience in Desired Field

No prior experience or other training required. Participants must be over 18 years of age easygoing and flexible. They must be committed to working with underserved communities and be able to live in rural areas. Volunteers must be open minded, willing to take initiative to contribute and learn from their environment and be respectful to their surroundings.

The students should be able to adjust to inconveniences caused due to disturbances in power supply and water supply in the remote areas. Students need to respect the local traditions and norms of the community they stay with and be careful not to disturb others in any manner.
