Temple University in Spain is based at the University of Oviedo in the northern province of Asturias, a vibrant and picturesque region bordered by mountains to the south and the Cantabrian Sea to the north. Removed from the heavy tourism of many other Spanish regions and cities, you can have a truly immersive experience in this off-the-beaten-path location.

ACADEMICS 
 

Temple in Spain offers a range of experiences. Whether you are new to learning Spanish, are looking to advance your language skills, or Spanish is your first language, you can study alongside local and international students in Oviedo! You can choose to focus on full language immersion or to take English-taught courses in subject areas like business, computer science, economics, electrical engineering, or liberal arts, while beginning or improving your Spanish language skills. 
 
Your English-taught courses will be offered by University of Oviedo faculty in their degree programs, while Spanish courses will be taught by Temple Program Director Jaime Durán or faculty in the La Casa de las Lenguas, University of Oviedo's center dedicated to language learning
  
Credit-bearing internships are also available.

Activities and Excursions  
 
During the program, students will have the opportunity to participate in both Temple-organized events and events offered by the University of Oviedo.  
 
  • Temple-organized eventsResident Director Dr. Jaime Durán welcomes students to Madrid at the start of the program for a multi-day orientation within Madrid and to surrounding towns. The group then travels together to Oviedo. Dr. Durán organizes group dinners throughout the program, and, in addition, the program includes a weekend excursion to Picos de Europa, a mountain range to the south of Oviedo and the second most visited national park in Spain. 
     
  • University of Oviedo activities: In addition to academic courses, the university’s Casa de las Lenguas offers cultural programming and organized leisure activities, enabling you to acquire in-depth knowledge of Spanish and Asturian culture and strengthen your Spanish language proficiency outside of a formal classroom setting. The summer program includes two weekend day trips while the semester program includes a language partner conversation exchange, a film series, and some day trips. Some non-credit enrichment workshops that have taken place in the past included cartoon design, cooking, dance, digital journalism, photography, photojournalism, radio broadcasting, and storytelling. 
     

 
ELIGIBILITY 

 
Temple programs are open to qualified students matriculated at any U.S. or Canadian college or university. Eligibility is limited to students who:
 
  • Are at least 18 years old at the time of application 
  • Are enrolled as a full-time matriculated student at the time of application as well as during the semester prior to studying abroad. 
  • Will have completed at least two (2) semesters of college-level study by the program start. 
  • Meet the minimum cumulative GPA requirement, on a 4.0 scale from all colleges/universities attended. 
    • Temple Semester Programs: 2.75 
    • Temple Summer Programs:?2.5 
  • Remain in good academic standing from the time of application until the start of your term abroad; students on academic warning are not eligible to participate.

Pre-departure Preparations  
 
Once accepted, we provide you with detailed pre-departure materials designed to guide you in preparing yourself for your time abroad. Pre-departure materials include:

  • Cultural preparation information and resources 
  • Billing information 
  • Travel and arrival information 

 
Pre-departure Orientation 
 
After your acceptance, our staff hosts pre-departure orientation sessions for all students. 
 
 
Passports and Visas     
 
A valid passport is required for all programs. Visas are required for most semester programs, and some summer programs. Please read more about passports, visas, and how we will support students with the visa process. 

 
Housing 
 
Temple in Spain housing options may vary by term. Check with the Program Management Team for information about your term's available options. Housing options typically include:

  • Homestay  
     
We encourage you to apply to the program well before the deadline as the program and/or housing capacity may be limited.
 
 
On-site Orientation and Support  
 
An on-site orientation takes place after you arrive in your host city and may include:  
 
  • Introductions to the faculty, staff, and resources of the program  
  • Facilities and neighborhood tour  
  • Cultural norms and expectations 
  • Review of health and safety matters and emergency procedures  
  • Cultural activities/excursions  
  • Housing orientation 

     
Dr. Durán, a native of Oviedo and Temple faculty member, serves as the program director and supports students 24/7. He teaches a course during the semester and in the summer, as do visiting faculty members from Temple's main campus. Your other courses are taught by University of Oviedo faculty members. Details about on-site orientation are provided to accepted students before departure.
