Early Renaissance 2013

FAIRFIELD UNIVERSITY FLORENCE PROGRAM
JANUARY INTERSESSION

JANUARY 1 - 12, 2013
Spend your semester break in Florence, Italy, the historic "cradle of Renaissance civilization." Fairfield University offers you the opportunity to earn three credits while taking a fascinating course in one of  Europe's most-loved cities.

Fairfield University, a Jesuit institution, is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, which accredits schools and colleges in the six New England states.

AH 130 Early Renaissance Art in Florence

The early 15th century was marked by an extraordinary convergence of artistic talent, interest in the classics, civic pride, and belief in "man as the measure of all things." This course examines the artists and architects who contributed to the Early Renaissance, with emphasis on Florentines, including Donatello, Masaccio, Brunelleschi, and Botticelli. They are examined in the context of social and political conditions of the time. Broader issues, such as humanism and neo-Platoism, are also considered. 3 credits

    Arrival in Florence; Apartment check-in. Walking Tour Lecture: "Florence from Artichokes to Zucchini: Imperial Roman Trading Center to Renaissance Merchants and Masters" followed by an evening welcome dinner.
  • Thursday, January 3
    Morning classroom lecture.
    Museum visits: Interior of the Duomo, Basilica of Santa Croce, San Lorenzo, The Medici Chapel and the Michelangelo Tombs of Dawn and Twilight
  • Friday, January 4
    Morning classroom lecture.
    Museum visits: Museo dell Opera dell Duomo, Uffizi Gallery
  • Saturday, January 5
    Full day field trip to Siena
  • Sunday, January 6
    Morning visit to San Marco Monastery Museum and the Galleria dell'Accademia
  • Monday, January 7
    Morning excursion to Fiesole
