Jaguar Research and Conservation Short-Term Internship in Costa Rica
Travel to one of Central America’s rainforests in the south of Tortuguero National Park in Jalova, where you will assist in research and conservation initiatives working towards the preservation of the jaguar species.Interns will work directly with our local partners to help set up monitoring cameras, collecting data and monitoring images assisting with providing insight to local partners (Panthera, Coastal Jaguar Conservation), who actively contribute to sustainable development initiatives in the area.
Program Focus
Jaguars are one of the largest cats species in the world, living alone and marking their territory by famously clawing trees near their native habitats. They can be slippery creatures, opting to avoid detection as they navigate their hunting and mating rituals. They can be difficult to track down, which means research data is often fragmented or thin, hence the need for more granular data and for projects facilitating the collection of information in the conservation arena as a whole. This internship assists with working to turn around declining global numbers of the species, as well as providing participants with the opportunity to gain a formal leadership qualification in the conservation sector.
On this program, you will be assisting with facilitating surveys along with GVI’s staff, who have been extensively trained by our partners in the field. This internship is multifaceted and will require involvement in various programs on the ground, such as participating in rainforest and wildlife surveys, and birds surveys in the Southern end of Tortuguero National Park canals with a higher focus on maintenance of resources for the successful execution of the projects on the ground. As an intern you will also be expected to be proactive and flexible, to embrace this unique experience and to learn all you can.
