Program Description:

India Community Development Internship (long-term)

 Gain practical experience when you join a community development internship in India’s tropical state of Kerala. Receive training and dedicated mentorship and put your new skills into action at your work placement, improving the lives of local community members by providing them with better community resources. All while simultaneously immersing yourself in the beauty of the surrounding beaches, tropical greenery, tea plantations and fascinating culture of southern India.
 
PROGRAM FOCUS
 
As a community development intern you will get the opportunity to gain a broad range of experience whilst participating in our sustainable community development initiatives in an urban context. You'll also get the chance to get a deeper insight into Indian culture, living and working in a culturally rich environment. You will spend your days working to support our alongside project partners in the local community whilst also getting the chance to get a deeper insight into Indian culture, living and working in a culturally rich environment.

After the 12-week support and training phase conducted on our project in India, you will start your work placement with a partner organisation or assist the GVI team in the operation and management of our project. With both pathways, you will work alongside professional teams, gaining valuable experience throughout. This internship, run in close collaboration with the community, offers the opportunity for you to gain experience in a professional international environment, giving you a base for developing your own career.

After a successful internship, qualifying candidates may be given the opportunity to work for GVI or selected partner organisations in India or in other countries around the world where GVI operates. Field work positions can be paid or unpaid, range in duration from one month to one year, and is dependent on availability. Qualification for possible GVI positions is at the sole discretion of Global Vision International.

Earn your GVI ILM Leadership Development certificate, a qualification recognised by the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM). All internships are geared at developing your leadership and role model skills, allowing you to develop a variety of key soft and hard skills that will put you a step ahead of the pack. GVI have been running community development, education, and conservation projects since 1997 and our highly experienced field staff will help you gain and improve vital skill sets to improve your future job prospects.

LOCATION
 
Travel to the southwestern province of Kerala. The western coast of India features the Western Ghat mountain range, the eighth most biodiverse mountain range in the world. These mountain ranges are home to 39 World Heritage sites featuring forested wildlife reserves, recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). 
 
GVI volunteers in India stay in Kochi, a city that harbours an array of natural wonders and historical influences including Periyar National Park and Fort Kochi. This guarantees that those volunteering in India with GVI will experience significant ecological and cultural diversity. 
 
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
 
  • Become fully immersed in the Indian food culture as you sample a local Keralan feast, known as a thali.
  • Assist in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UN SDG) 4: Quality Education in India.  
  • Develop hard skills and practical on the ground experience in teaching and lesson planning.
  • Take the opportunity to learn a few basic phrases in one of India’s local languages.
