Program Description:

Laos TEFL & Teaching Internship (long-term)

Cover
Discover the ancient country of Laos when you volunteer with GVI on critical community development projects throughout the city of Luang Prabang

Although tourism has picked up in Laos over recent years, it is still one of the poorest countries in the world and is largely an agricultural country. By volunteering in Laos with GVI, you can contribute to sustainable projects that aim to have a long-term impact on the lives of local community members and their futures.

With project focuses ranging in marine and wildlife conservation, childcare, animal care, health care and teaching, there is something for everyone.
Spend your gap year, career break or volunteering holiday exploring a land rich in culture and ornate temples, as you make a difference teaching English to young Buddhist monks or volunteering with children on a variety of childcare initiatives.

 PROGRAM FOCUS

YOUR FIRST 12 WEEKS
During this initial training phase, GVI teaching interns in Laos will live and work with other interns at the GVI base accommodation in Luang Prabang. Here they will complete a training program including the 150 hour online TEFL course and receive GVI ILM Leadership Development training. From Monday to Friday, for approximately 4-6 hours each day, interns will teach English to students ranging from 8-25 year old. Students’ levels vary from beginner to advanced and interns will teach a variety of topics including grammar, conversational English and subject-based English classes. As you progress through the internship, you can expect to be given greater responsibility in terms of overseeing lesson planning, taking on extra tasks that contribute to the running of the program and assisting the GVI staff in volunteer management. In the process they will gain knowledge and practical teaching and leadership experience, while becoming immersed in the culture of Laos.

SECOND 12 WEEKS - WORK PLACEMENT
GVI collaborates with local partners in Luang Prabang and the surrounding area. Your work placement may include schools or language centers in Luang Prabang or the surrounding area, where you will support English language education. This might be at a primary school or an English Language Centre. These work placements offer the opportunity for you to gain hands-on experience.

The details of project work may vary at any given time. During the school terms, participants may work with novice monks, or other children and young adults in the community. During the summer months, from approximately June to late August participants may also contribute to a range of summer programs for children and young adults. Laos also has many festivals and holidays. During these times the community might not be holding educational classes but participants will have the opportunity to get involved in local celebrations and other cultural activities.
