Thailand Coastal Conservation – Long Term Internship

Kick off your conservation career in Thailand. Gain conservation research skills and valuable field work experience while living and working with other conservation interns in Thailand’s coastal area of Phang Nga. Work alongside local conservation organisations, working toward United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, UN SDGs, #14, Life below Water and #15 Life Below Land, learning about and contributing toward sea turtle, tropical bird and butterfly surveys, and island conservation, camera trapping, marine plastic pollution, and the importance of environmental education.
PROGRAM FOCUS
The program will be split into 2 parts:
First Half (12 weeks)
Interns on this six month coastal conservation internship program, will have the opportunity to get involved in a varied range of conservation projects. You might work at two local turtle head-start centers, assisting with conducting health checks on turtles, applying antibacterial and antifungal ointment to the turtles, collecting turtle morphological data, or conducting turtle enrichment studies.
Other, year-round projects include collecting debris off beaches, sorting the waste, and submitting data to the Ocean Conservancy Database, conducting bird surveys and submitting the data to the e-bird database, and, once a month, monitoring camera traps on two nearby islands. If you happen to have booked onto the internship during the months of November and April, you might also get involved in coral reef conservation surveys. On this internship the importance of social and economic factors influencing conservation efforts will be a major focus. Interns will be asked to contribute toward our environmental education program in the surrounding community. Training for all these conservation projects will be provided at the beginning of the internship and support will be provided throughout by staff selected, vetted, trained, and managed by GVI.
This program includes the ILM Endorsed Leadership program
Second Half (12 weeks)
After a successful initial three months, interns will have the chance to put their leadership and field work experience into practice. Interns at this level have earned greater responsibility within the team, taking a leading role on biodiversity survey hikes and other volunteer or intern research and conservation activities. This is also the time when interns may have the opportunity to complete a mini research project on a conservation topic of their choice.
LOCATION
Travel to southern Thailand to live and volunteer in Phang Nga, a province along the Andaman sea. Contribute to conservation projects in a region consisting of mangrove forests, limestone cliffs, white-sanded beaches, and tropical islets. On the weekend, or after your GVI volunteering project, you can visit Ao Phang Nga National Park to learn about the largest mangrove forest in Thailand.
Along with local community members and conservation organisations, GVI works towards marine conservation, environmental awareness and educational enhancement objectives.
If you are looking for a Thailand volunteer experience that combines tropical landscapes with meaningful sustainable development, a GVI program in Phang Nga is the province for you. You’ll have the opportunity to assist in preserving sea turtle populations, or gaining experience in teaching or health education.
