Program Description:
Southern Africa Header

Deconstruct environmental and racial injustices felt today by examining the legacies of apartheid and colonization.

Spend a semester in Namibia and South Africa, two countries with unique and multifaceted histories not often explored in depth in U.S. curricula. Each of these nations has struggled against the lasting impacts of colonialization, apartheid, the fight for liberation, and ethnic and racial tensions. This program examines how people can organize themselves toward positive social change and the triumph of the human spirit.

In addition to your academic courses, gain hands-on work experience in a development agency through an academic internship for credit.  Courses are available across multiple subjects, including Political Science & Government, Religion, International Studies, or History.

Learn About:
  • The challenges posed by underdevelopment, globalization, extreme inequality, and the legacies of apartheid
  • The impact of gender, race, culture, and identity on democratic processes, human rights issues, and social and economic advancement today

Meet With:
  • Members of the African National Congress and opposition parties
  • Church leaders
  • Feminist and Human Rights activists
  • United States Agency for International Development (USAID) representatives
  • Students and professors from the University of Namibia

We like to get you out of the classroom and into the community! Your classes include guest speakers, trips to visit local groups, museums, businesses, and more. We also include fun excursions in the area to help you learn even more about the history, culture, and region!

All of our excursions are included in the program fee, so you will always have amazing activities to join, with no hidden costs! Our Southern Africa program takes students to a variety of excellent areas such as:

  • Etosha Game National Reserve
  • Namib Desert
  • Walvis Bay
  • The Atlantic Coast
  • Rural areas of Namibia
  • A one-week educational seminar in Johannesburg
  • A one-week educational seminar in Cape Town
  • A visit to the Eastern Cape

When you are not staying with a host family or traveling, you will live in the study center in Windhoek. The CGEE house is a 10-minute walk from downtown Windhoek, where students will find traditional and international cuisines, art galleries, contemporary shopping malls, live concerts, and public gardens where festivals are held throughout the year. Students can travel anywhere from an outdoor craft and food market in Windhoek’s township areas to a movie theater in the suburbs for one low taxi fare. Students are sure to run into many friendly faces as they explore the various cultural and entertainment activities that this vibrant community has to offer.
