A medical check may also be required as per visa requirements (costs incurred by the participant).
Internship Details
Social & Community Development is a broad field that encompasses a wide variety of issues, so there is a range of potential placements available for interns who are interested in this career path. Such organizations have common values, dedicated to helping diverse clients and community groups, ranging in age, background, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and more.
Individual internship experiences vary, as the specific placement that you’re assigned will depend on review of your resume and your current level of studies and experience. Therefore, if you’re at a more introductory level, you should reasonably expect a more introductory internship. Likewise, if you’re interning for a shorter duration, you will have a different experience from someone who is interning for a longer duration. Placement preferences are considered but always subject to availability.
Interns should be prepared to interact with diverse cultures and demographics, and to be involved in tasks such as creating educational material and resources, assisting with programs focused on people’s wellbeing, supporting fundraising efforts, and shadowing professionals in responding to situations as they arise. In situations where counseling may take place, interns may have scope to shadow/assist local staff, provided that permission is granted by the client. Interns should not expect to be directly responsible for the care, diagnosis, or treatment of a client. Supervision may be handled by a range of staff, as teams can often be multidisciplinary.
In all cases, the first week of your experience will focus on settling in and gaining some introductory knowledge, as you will not “hit the ground running”. Rather, you should start with learning about the placement to gain an understanding of what you can build upon, develop, learn, and contribute. Ensure that you ask questions and provide feedback during the introductory period, so that your supervisor understands how you’re progressing. This will help them to better understand important details, such as how quickly you learn, what you find challenging, what you find interesting, etc.
